Dairy Free Cool Whip Recipe

The idea for this recipe came from my white, fluffy frosting recipe using whipped egg whites as the base. I already have a coconut whipped cream recipe, but not everyone likes or can eat coconut. Also, cool whip has a slightly different texture than whipped cream. This recipe is really easy to make, requires no special ingredients, and tastes just like like cool whip.

Use it as a topping in an iced coffee or frappuccino, in your favorite recipe, or with my angel food cake key lime pie, or hot chocolate. Yum!

*Note- This recipe contains raw eggs.

2 egg whites

1/2 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp cream of tartar

3 Tbsp sugar, palm sugar (will alter the color), or splenda

1. Beat egg whites and vanilla in mixing bowl on high.

2. When the egg whites start to turn foamy, add the cream of tartar.

3. Beat until soft peaks start forming and add your sugar.

4. Continue beating until hard peaks form and mixture is smooth. Enjoy!

  1. I don’t mean to offend or anything, but this is basically a french meringue

  2. Yes, it is basically a French meringue, but it works great as a substitute for cool whip. I think many people, including me, wouldn’t naturally think of using a french meringue type recipe as a cool whip substitute… sometimes you just need the idea.

    Thanks for you feedback!

I have been looking for DAYS for a gluten and dairy free alternative to whipped cream that also doesn’t have the trans fat and oils. I’ve tried I don’t know how many things and finally, I think this may be the trick! Thank you so much for sharing. Also, I did not know that this is a french meringue but am so grateful that you shared your idea and recipe! Thank you so much!

  4. Thank you! I have had a heck of a time trying to find something dairy free that is also coconut free! Cant wait to try it

  5. This is great because you don’t have to prepare ahead by having chilled coconut milk. I’m allergic to milk and often need last minute dessert ideas. This will open so many options for me! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Hi Cassidy – kudos for posting a dairy-free whipped topping idea w/o coconut! Do you think it will work as the topping on a cream pie that will sit overnight in the fridge and have to be transported to a friend across town, without having a meltdown?

    • Thank you Carrie!

While I think it would be better the same day, I’ve never tried storing it overnight. Could you make the cream pie the night before and the topping right before you take it to your friends house? It’s just a suggestion because honestly I don’t know and I would hate for it not to work!!! Hope you like it 🙂
