UPDATE- Ava Anderson Non-Toxic is now PURE HAVEN ESSENTIALS!!!! They currently do not have as many products as before because they are moving all products in-house, so if it was made else-where it will not be available until they can produce it themselves.
I started using natural cleaners and essential oils several years ago in an effort to reduce the toxins in our house, use less medications, and to increase my family’s overall health… but I never went any further to look at all the products and personal care products that we use. However, I recently listened to the new ‘Truth About Cancer Series’ (not an affiliate link, series only airs for free about twice a year, link in upper right corner of site) and it really made me take a hard look at ALL of the products I use and the toxins we are exposed to every day.
Toxins. Are. Everywhere. They are in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the products we use. Toxins can cause small problems such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and rashes, all the way up to serious neurological problems, a weakened immune system, and even cancer. In fact, did you know that according to the Presidents Cancer Panel, only 10% of cancer is genetic? That means that 90% of all cancer is caused by environmental factors! – WHAT!?! Even if you have or have had cancer, it’s still very important to not burden your body with additional toxins and chemicals.
And even though we can’t control all of the environmental factors, we can control a lot of it!
- reduce the amount of plastic we use
- filter our water
- eat clean foods without GMO’s and fewer pesticides
- and get the toxins out of the products and personal care products we use at home
In fact, did you know that (brace yourself, it’s a long list!):
[dropshadowbox align=”none” effect=”raised” width=”auto” height=”” background_color=”#ffffff” border_width=”1″ border_color=”#dddddd” ]Your personal and home care products (from shampoo to antibacterial wipes to makeup) contain harmful ingredients (allergens, carcinogens, neurotoxins, and endocrine disruptors) that could be hazardous to your health?
Exposure to toxins while pregnant can increase the risk of autism
Children with Autism are much more sensitive to toxins
1/3 of personal care products have ingredients that are linked to cancer?
Women use an average of 12 personal care products containing 168 ingredients every day
60% of products have chemicals known to disrupt hormones or act like estrogen in the body
The European Union has banned nearly 1400 ingredients from cosmetics and personal care products and the US has only banned or restricted 11 ingredients? -ELEVEN!
It is more dangerous to put a toxin on our skin than eat it because our bodies de-toxify what we eat. Our skin does not.
The US has not passed a law regulating the cosmetic industry since 1938
1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime, 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys are identified with autism spectrum disorder in the US, and that Alzheimers is up 500% in the past 20 years?[/dropshadowbox]
Even after hearing all of the facts about the negative effects of toxins and chemicals in cosmetics and personal care products I was leary to change my products to say the least. After all, I’ve tried natural deodorants and they were a huge NO GO!! And how could I ever use any other brand of make-up than my precious MAC!???! So I just ignored it – that’s a good idea right? But then it started to bother me every time I would use a product that I knew had junk ingredients in it. Plus, my son was going through a really rough patch so I started looking at the products I use. To my surprise, one of the first ingredients in the shampoo I had just bought was wheat protein – no wonder my son’s symptoms were flaring up, he was literally bathing in gluten!
So I started trying various natural, non-toxic products and doing research and I finally landed on Ava Anderson Non Toxic. I was initially drawn to Ava Anderson as opposed to other non-toxic brands because of the price. Most non-toxic products are ridiculously expensive, but Ava products are priced comparable to a natural brand you can buy at a drug store or Target – but much cleaner. Just as a side note- When doing price comparisons keep an eye on the size of the bottle,. I’ve noticed that the Ava Anderson products are larger than most natural brands. Also, it came highly recommended from a fellow blogger I’ve been following for a long time whom I’ve grown to trust. So I decided to try their products and I can truthfully say that their products work just as good, if not better, than other high end brands! I am so thrilled to finally find a non-toxic brand that I actually like and is reasonably priced – YAY!
ALL of Ava Anderson Non-Toxic products are FREE of:
- Parabens (these mimic estrogen and are suspected to be linked to breast cancer)
- Synthetic “Fragrance” (this is a “catch all” to hide hundreds of ingredients. 75% of products with “fragrance” have phthalates which are linked to birth defects, breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, and autism and ADHD while pregnant)
- Hidden Ingredients or Contaminants i.e. phthalates, nitrosamines, formaldehyde
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate
- Petroleum Products
- Triclosan (this is the active ingredient in most ANTI-BACTERIAL products and is actually listed as a pesticide)
- Oxybenzone and Octinoxate (endocrine disruptors found in SUNSCREEN -disrupt the brain, reproductive system, metabolism, thyroid, blood sugar, etc…)
- Retinyl Palmitate and Nanoarticles (Carcinogens found in SUNSCREEN and can cause skin cancer and free radicals)
- Aluminum (a known crocinogen and neurotoxin which can cause cancer and destroy nerve tissue and is in almost all DEODORANTS)
- They use many organic ingredients
- They do not test on aminals
- All products are GLUTEN FREE
- Most are vegan
- They are affordable, and they work! Seriously, they work just as good, if not better, than many high end brands!
So far these are the Ava Anderson products I have tried and this is my honest opinion of them:
Mascara– I loved the mascara! It didn’t clump, get hard, or give me raccoon eyes by the end of the day, I will definitely keep using it.
Shampoo/Conditioner- I didn’t think I would like these because they didn’t lather AT ALL and my hair didn’t feel really soft after I rinsed out the conditioner, but when I blow-dried it my hair was soft and shiny! I have a hard time finding shampoo and conditioner that I like because the ends of my hair are dry and closer to my scalp is oily, but my hair felt conditioned, clean, and didn’t look or feel at all oily – YAY! (Note- It’s very concentrated so I only use a nickel-sized amount of conditioner even though it feels like not enough) Also, it took about 2 weeks for my hair to adjust but I’m SO glad I stuck in there!!!
Body Wash- The body wash lathered nicely and smelled great!
Deodorant- I’m pretty picky with my deodorant. I usually only use 1 brand of clinical strength deodorant because most don’t work for me. While Ava’s spray deodorant didn’t work for me, I LOVE the stick deodorant! Not only does it smell like chocolate, but it actually works… I never thought I would find a non-toxic deodorant that actually works – YAY!!! NOTE- On some fabrics it can stain and it’s not as soft as most deodorants.
Lotion– Most non-toxic lotions are too thick and hard to spread, but this lotion is smooth, soft, and easy to spread so I liked it and it smelled really good.
Hand Sanitizer- I usually make my own hand sanitizer using essential oils but my husband hates the way it smells but he liked the Ava Anderson hand sanitizer so I will continue to buy it for him.
Lip Balm- LOVE the lip balm, leaves my lips soft and smooth.
Skin Cleanser, Toner, Exfoliator, and Moisturizer- I have struggled with acne my whole life and use strong facial cleanser so I was worried that if I switched I would break out but it has worked really well! After using the skin care line my face feels really fresh, clean, soft, and has stayed clear without any breakouts!
Eye Makeup Remover- While the eye make-up remover worked o.k. for me but I don’t think it’s my favorite. I will probably continue to use coconut oil as my make-up remover.
Men’s Shaving Cream- My husband liked the shaving cream better than the shaving cream I normally buy him. He said it was cleaner to use and left his face really soft.
Toothpaste- I liked the toothpaste but it has a neutral taste and isn’t as strong tasting as most toothpastes you can buy at the store. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s hard to get out of the tube.
Lipgloss-LOVE the lipgloss – it really does stay on like a lipstick!
I didn’t sign up with Ava Anderson Non Toxic to make money or start a business. I signed up with Ava Anderson Non Toxic mainly because I wanted the discount 🙂 But also, I believe that they have quality products without the harmful chemicals and I wanted to help spread the message.
