Dairy Free Homemade Chocolate Syrup With No Refined Sugar

My kids LOVE chocolate milk, I think most kids do. But usually the first ingredient listed in chocolate syrup to make their chocolate milk is high fructose corn syrup, followed by water, sugar, cocoa, and then a whole list of ingredients that I can’t pronounce and have no idea what they are – EEESSHHH!!!

So I decided to make my own unrefined version with only 6 simple ingredients: coconut palm sugar {brown sugar could be subbed}, honey, cocoa, water, salt, and vanilla. It took only about 3 minutes to mix together the ingredients, and about 8 minutes to cook. Now I have a chocolate syrup that I can feel good about feeding to my kids and they couldn’t even tell I had switched, they drank it down telling me how much they loved chocolate milk! I even taste tested my version and the bottled kind and they tasted almost identical!

I wasn’t planning on posting this recipe so soon but I was so excited about it, I just couldn’t wait 🙂 Especially since it’s suddenly turned hot outside and it will go perfect on top of ice cream. I bought The Spunky Coconut’s Vegan Ice Cream Cookbook when it first came out {it has since been updated to the one I have linked) and have already started making her ice cream again this year. I’ve made most all of the recipes in her book and they are all FANTASTIC, I just add a little bit extra sweetener in some of them 🙂

Pin for later:
