This low-carb keto alfredo sauce recipe with cream cheese is not only super easy, but it's the most creamy and delicious alfredo sauce that you will ever make!

alfredo and palmini noodles tossed together in a bowl with a fork.
alfredo and palmini noodles tossed together in a bowl with a fork.

Why buy bottled alfredo when you can easily make it at home? This keto alfredo sauce recipe is rich, thick, creamy, and to-die-for delicious. It's restaurant-quality that you can make at home!

Plus, it has cream cheese! While cream cheese isn't a classic alfredo sauce ingredient, it really takes this dish to the next level in creaminess, taste, and is a natural thickener without using any starches.

Alfredo sauce is naturally gluten-free, low-carb, and keto, so there are no unusual ingredients. Everyone will love it, even if they don't follow a low-carb diet!

And if you're looking for more Italian comfort food, I think you'll love this keto deep-dish pizza with a stuffed crust, chicken piccata, lasagna, and chicken parmesan recipe!

Or this keto cheeseburger casserole from Keto Cooking Wins looks amazing too!

Here are the simple ingredients for a smooth, creamy texture that melts in your mouth.

For the best results, use freshly grated parmesan cheese off of a block instead of the powdered variety. It will melt into the sauce and blend together to make it super creamy!

    • Butter - Salted or unsalted will work in this recipe.
    • Garlic - l love garlic! This recipe uses 4 cloves for a rich, garlicky taste.
    • Heavy Cream - Adds richness and creaminess.
    • Cream Cheese - Natural thickener and adds rich flavor.
    • Grated Parmesan Cheese - Real parmesan is best. The powdered variety (like the kind you put on pizza!) can create a grainy texture.
    • Sea Salt & Pepper - Add to taste.
    • Nutmeg - Optional, adds flavor that compliments the sauce.

    Easy instructions

The alfredo sauce is super quick and simple to make. Here are the easy instructions:

butter and garlic in cast iron skillet.
butter and garlic in a cast-iron skillet.

Step 1: Saute garlic in melted butter.

You'll start by melting some butter over medium heat. Then add garlic and saute until it becomes fragrant.

Step 2: Add heavy whipping cream and cream cheese.

Then, slowly whisk in the heavy whipping cream and softened cream cheese cut into blocks. Be sure to soften it and cut it into blocks or it will take forever to melt!

To avoid it separating, whisk it together instead of stirring it with a spatula.

Step 3: Add parmesan and spices.

Stir in some freshly shredded parmesan, salt, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.

Bring to a light simmer and whisk until the alfredo is smooth and has slightly thickened, around 3 to 5 minutes.

    Serving suggestions

My favorite way to serve this keto alfredo sauce is with zucchini noodles and blackened chicken. Alfredo also goes well with grilled shrimp!

I also really love Capellas Pasta, but even though it's gluten and grain-free, it's a bit higher in carbs.

In the picture above, I used Palmini noodles. They are made from Hearts Of Palm and look the most like regular noodles. However, even though some people love them, they have a slight aftertaste for me, which is why I prefer zucchini noodles.

It's also great served over spaghetti squash or in casseroles such as in this Keto Alfredo Chicken Bake.

Or try serving it alongside this brussels sprouts recipe from Cooktoria! I know brussel sprouts have a bad reputation, but when prepared right they have fantastic flavor and texture.

    Storage

Follow these tips to successfully store and reheat your sauce:

    • The Refrigerator: This alfredo sauce can be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container or jar for up to 5 days.
    • Freezing: Unfortunately I don't recommend freezing alfredo sauce because it will separate.
    • Reheating: Reheat slowly and at a low temperature on the stovetop, stirring often. Slow and low is the key! Do not microwave because it may separate. Once reheated, do not reheat again.

    Substitutions

    • For the best results, use freshly grated parmesan cheese off of a block instead of the powdered variety. Even though the powdered variety (like the kind you put on pizza!) will work, it can leave the sauce grainy.
    • Dairy-free substitutes will not work well in this recipe. If you're dairy-free, be sure to check out my Dairy-Free & Paleo Alfredo Sauce Recipe!

    Top tips

    • Be sure to soften the cream cheese and cut it into blocks or it will take forever to melt!
    • To keep the sauce from separating, whisk it together instead of stirring it with a spatula.
    • Do not boil or overheat, this will cause the sauce to separate and will ruin it! If you are worried about overheating, turn the heat off before you add the parmesan. This will also prevent clumping.
    • My favorite way to serve this is with zucchini noodles and blackened chicken or in this Chicken Alfredo Bake!
