Tzatziki - pronounced Tsaht-ZEE-kee (hear the correct pronunciation here) - is a refreshing chilled dip or spread made primarily with Greek yogurt, drained cucumber, and fresh herbs.

And the best part? It's super fast and easy to make! This low-carb tzatziki sauce recipe only requires 7 ingredients and 5 minutes.

The only trick you need to know is to drain the cucumber before mixing it into the yogurt. Otherwise, the cucumber waters down the sauce too much.

After you drain the cucumber, simply mix everything together and serve right away or chill for later.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is tzatziki sauce keto?

Yes, two tablespoons of tzatziki sauce contain 1 net carb, making it naturally low-carb and keto-friendly.

How do you make tzatziki sauce dairy-free, whole30, and/or paleo?

To make paleo, whole30, and/or dairy-free tzatziki sauce, simply replace the yogurt with a dairy-free unsweetened Greek-style yogurt. Culina and CoYo brands both work well and can be found at most health food stores.

Can you make tzatziki sauce ahead of time?

Yes, this sauce can be made up to 2 to 3 days in advance and kept covered in the refrigerator. In fact, it is best made at least 30 minutes ahead of time to allow the flavors to meld together.

    Is tzatziki sauce gluten-free?

Yes, tzatziki sauce is naturally gluten-free.

    Ingredients

    ingredients on countertop

    Here are the simple ingredients:

    • Plain Greek Yogurt - Make sure you grab plain yogurt! And try to find full-fat yogurt if possible. Full fat makes the dip thicker, creamier, and adds more flavor. If you can’t find full-fat (like me!) you can substitute it with 2% or non-fat. Keep in mind that the better the yogurt, the better the sauce!
    • Cucumber- Seeded, grated, and drained.
    • Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Adds a very slight olive flavor and richness.
    • Lemon Juice - Adds acidity and brightens up the flavor. You can substitute lime juice if needed.
    • Garlic - Adds flavor - because garlic is awesome!
    • Dill - Classic flavor, so don't skip it! Can use fresh or dried.
    • Sea Salt - Add to taste. If the sauce seems "flat," it needs more salt!

    Easy instructions

    seeded cucumber on countertop

Step #1: Seed and grate the cucumber.

While you don't have to remove the seeds, I prefer to remove them before grating. To do this, simply cut the cucumber in half, then use a spoon to scoop out the seeds.

Then, use the large holes on a box grater to grate 1 cup.

squeezing out juice into a bowl

Step #2: Squeeze out the excess moisture from the cucumber.

shredded cucumber after squeezing out juice

Wrap the grated cucumber in a kitchen towel or several layers of paper towels and squeeze out the excess moisture into a bowl or over the sink. Set aside.

adding shredded cucumber to the tzatziki sauce

Step #3: Mix together all of the ingredients.

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the yogurt, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and sea salt. Stir in the grated cucumber.

Taste and add more salt if needed.

    Step #4: Serve!

While this can be served immediately, I prefer to allow mine to rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow all the flavors to mesh together!

    Storage instructions

    • Store: Store covered in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
    • Freeze: While tzatziki can be frozen and tightly wrapped for up to 3 months, it will affect the texture. I recommend fresh for the best taste and texture!

💭 Tip: If your keto tzatziki sauce is watery after being in the fridge, simply drain off any extra liquid.

What to serve with keto tzatziki sauce?

plated greek chicken with sauce and salad

My very favorite way to serve this is with Greek Chicken and Greek Salad with low-carb dinner rolls or pita bread with hummus for a complete meal!

However, it also goes great with grilled vegetables, crackers and cheese, kebabs, and a variety of meats.

    Top tips

    • Try to find full-fat Greek yogurt if possible. Full fat makes the dip thicker, creamier, and adds more flavor.
    • While I prefer to remove the seeds from the cucumber, this is an optional step.
    • If your keto tzatziki sauce is watery after being in the fridge, simply drain off any extra liquid.
    • Be sure to drain the cucumber before mixing it into the yogurt. Otherwise, the cucumber waters down the sauce too much.
    • While I prefer this recipe without mint, feel free to add 1 ยฝ Tablespoons of finely chopped fresh mint if desired.
