    What are country-style ribs?

Surprisingly, country-style ribs aren't actually ribs at all! They come from near the shoulder area and are cut from the center and blade portion of the pork loin.

The ribs are usually boneless but if they do have a bone in them, it is the scapula or shoulder blade.

They are still called ribs because they are similar to standard ribs in terms of flavor and consistency.

    Sugar-free bbq sauce

I recently discovered Baby Ray's Sugar-Free BBQ Sauce and it's AMAZING!!! It's the only store-bought keto bbq I recommend because it doesn't have a weird sugar-free aftertaste.

If you prefer homemade, I like this Keto bbq Sauce from All Day I Dream About Food! It's easy to make and tastes just like the kind I grew up on.

But feel free to use any low-carb BBQ sauce that you prefer.

    Why boil country-style ribs

    ribs in pot after boiling.
ribs in the pot after boiling.

To make the country-style ribs tender, they need to gently simmer for around 45 minutes to an hour.

This softens and tenderizes the meat. I do not recommend cooking them at a full boil though, as this will make the meat tough.

After they have simmered, there are 2 options. You can either:

    • Cook the ribs on the grill
    • Or cook them in the oven

    Grill

melted bbq sauce and butter in saucepan
melted bbq sauce and butter in a saucepan.

After they have simmered, melt together ¼ Cup of butter, non-dairy butter, or ghee and 1 Cup of BBQ Sauce.

Place the ribs on the grill over high heat and grill the ribs for around 20 minutes, basting with the BBQ mixture and turning frequently.

    Bake

If you prefer to bake the ribs after boiling, simply place them in a large casserole dish with melted butter and BBQ Sauce.

Ensure all the ribs are well coated with the BBQ mixture and cook at 325 degrees covered for 30 minutes. Then, remove the cover and cook for an additional 30 minutes.

And that's it! Perfect, flavorful, and tender BBQ Country Style Low-Carb Ribs!!!

    Serving suggestions

Here are some sides that go great with this recipe:

    • Keto Cornbread
    • Sugar-Free Coleslaw
    • Side Salad with Ranch or Balsamic Dressing
    • Easy Skillet Green Beans Recipe

Or if you're looking for more low-carb grilling or smoking recipes, check out my keto baby back ribs or this smoked pork loin and smoked pulled pork from A Grill For All Seasons!

    Storage instructions

Leftover keto ribs can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days or frozen for up to 4 months.

    Substitutions

These are gluten-free, low-carb, and keto. However here are some substitutions to make them fit more diets:

    • Paleo And Whole30: Use Primal Kitchen or Tessamae's BBQ sauce and replace the butter with ghee.
    • Dairy-Free: Use dairy-free butter.

     Top tips

    • My favorite bbq sauce is Baby Ray's Sugar-Free BBQ Sauce, but use any that you prefer.
    • When choosing butter, I always choose grass-fed butter because it tastes so much better. It’s also way healthier! It has vitamin K-2 (which is good for your arteries!), good fats, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, you can use any butter that you prefer.
    • Be sure to simmer the pork ribs and do not cook them at full boil, as this will make the meat tough.

These look so amazing, Cassidy! I love good Country Style Ribs. I've broiled mine before grilling, but never boiled them before. Will try for sure. Thanks for sharing on Gluten-Free Wednesdays with us all! Btw, I shared on FB and folks won't to know the details on your slaw. Fell free to leave a comment on the post there if you'd like. 🙂

      xo,

Thank so much Shirley! I would love to leave a comment on your FB page, but since I don't have a personal account, FB won't let me comment on other people's pages 🙁 I would like to change it, but haven't figured it out yet.

        Thanks again!!!

Who knew that boiling ribs would make them more tender? Great idea. I would think it would work for chicken as well. The chicken here in Belize tends to be very tough even when I slow cook it in a crock pot. Im going to try it. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Celeste - let me know how the boiled chicken tastes! The only time I've boiled chicken is when I'm making shredded chicken for another recipe 🙂
